Vürtheim was educated by Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography. After completing it, he wanted to make a name in the United States, but he finally settled in Amsterdam. He is best known for philatelists for a number of stamp designs, including the number series from 1899 that later appeared in the Dutch East Indies, Suriname and Curaçao.
